My name is Damian de Muijnck, I'm 19 years old and I live in the Netherlands.
I started playing drums when I was 4 years old. My parents bought my first drumset and I went to a local music school where I became a student of Friso van Wijck, which I still am. After a few years of lessons I became the drummer of my first band, which was a experimental jazz project. I discovered the 'Math' side of music and fell in love with it. Polyrhytmns, displacements and odd time signatures, I like it!
My vision was clear from the moment I started; I wanted to make it my job and study to become the best!
After a few years I became the drummer of Xeno, ZUMUZ, Distinguished and a few other projects I'm involved with in the Progressive Jazz/Rock/Metal. I also started my own project called DDM.
I'm studying at least 8 hours a day. I make schedules for myself to become a master in my instrument, to learn new possibilities on the kit and to expand my musical vocabulary . The Malcolm Gladwell theory suggests you need about 10,000 hours of doing something to become a master at it.
One of my biggest examples is Matthew Garstka from Animals as Leaders, which is also my one of my favorite bands. I like his way of thinking and he is one of the best drummers I've ever seen. There is one statement of Matt that really inspires me: "if you're truly passionate about something, you won't mind working your ass off for it".
After finishing the Conservatory in The Netherlands, I'll do audition at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Compelled to learn!
Today I can call myself a proud student of Salle de Jonge, Friso van Wijck, Matt Halpern and more of these sick drummers!
Right now, I'm working as a drumteacher at 'Drummerslab' (Together with Jeroen Vrolijk) and session musician. Need drums on a track? Do you want to take lessons? Need a drummer for a gig? Get in touch!
